Love Rocks was a mobiletile-matchingpuzzle video game, developed by Rovio Entertainment that was released on October 15, 2015 for Android and iOS devices worldwide.^[1] The game featured singer Shakira. However, after several updates within its first few months, the game was discontinued and sometime in 2018 it was removed from the app stores.

Gameplay[edit]

Players will get three gems or symbols hanging up above the level and drop them to make links of gems and/or symbols. The link of gems and/or symbols will collapse when it makes a matching link. Players will lose a turn if a gem or symbol passes the board. The player wins when the challenge of the level is complete, but it loses if the player cannot do so and they also lose a 'life' record, so power-ups and extra chances can be used in these situations but will cost game coins if you have not any. When all 'life' records are lost, the player have to wait to refill it, or do an in-app purchase using the game coins. Players can beat their friends' scores by connecting through Facebook and they can also beat Shakira's personal high score in each level.

Reception[edit]

A review by Tom Christiansen said that 'Love Rocks Starring Shakira is the epitome of product-placement in video games. This game really has little to do with Shakira, other than featuring her name and likeness.'^[2] According to Rebecca McLaughlin-Duane there were comparisons made to Bejeweled 'given the fact that gems need to be matched on a grid to accumulate points.'^[3] In November 4, 2015 Max Willens of International Business Times stated that the game is 'already a flop' ranking 'No. 304 in revenue generated among gaming apps, according to mobile-app analytics firm App Annie, and it has been falling steadily since the game peaked at No. 21 last month.'^[4]

Plan Ahead

In Love Rocks Starring Shakira, the game gives you a heads yo about not only the next 3 jewels you’ll have access to, but also the next row of jewels coming up from the bottom.

Look carefully: they’re slightly faded out (which might be hard to see if you’re playing the game outside), but you can make out the colors and symbols enough to know what is coming. Use this knowledge to your advantage. At the end of each set of jewels, the game will clear out the matches and move into the next round; before the round ends, if you have a jewel that you won’t be matching during that round, consider what is popping up in the next round. If a matching jewel is on it’s way, drop it in that line. As soon as the next round starts and the new jewels pop up, you’ll have an instant match.

Going Down

Drop the red jewel right down the middle, and when the current matches clear out, the next row will come up and it will automatically match with the upcoming red jewel.

As matches are cleared, the jewels above them will fall down to fill in the voids left behind by the cleared jewels. Gems that fall down and match with what they land on will instantly clear out as well.

So, for the sake of example, let’s say your bottom row has all green and one yellow jewel. The next row up is all red jewels, but you have one yellow jewel left to drop. If you drop that yellow jewel on top of the red jewel above the other yellow jewel, at the end of the round the red ones will clear out and the yellow one you just dropped will fall down onto the lone yellow, match, and clear out.

If a player matches every jewel they drop during a round, a diamond will appear on a random position on the board.

Diamonds are worth a good chunk of points, and snagging diamonds is the easiest way to meet some level’s score requirements, so you’ll want to summon in diamonds as much as you can.

The diamonds are tallied into your score instantly, you just need to match the two blocks that the diamond is sandwiched between. So if a diamond appears on the middle of a line, you’ll want to match the blocks that are on either side of the line. If a diamond appears in a corner of a block, you’ll have to match two blocks who touch that corner.
